primary school ‘t ooievaarsnest, aalst

In collaboration with NERO architecten, we won a competition for the primary school” ‘t Ooievaarsnest”, organized by the City of Aalst.
Our design focuses on creating a compact, efficient building with minimal circulaton space. Instead of traditional hallways, a spacious multipurpose hall forms the core of the building, around which four classrooms are clustered. This hall connects the public entrance square at the front with the playground at the back, serving as the vibrant heart of the school. The double-height, multipurpose space functions as a gym, lunchroom and event hall available for community use during weekends. By rotating the building on the plot, we establish a natural connection between the front square and the park behind. The playground is designed as a diverse landscape of greenery and play zones, balancing openness with a sense of intimacy.
